CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

ASC_9625.jpg

It is our mission to ensure that when our pupils leave us at the end of Year 6 they have:

  • strong foundational skills in reading, writing and maths, ready for their next stage in education and beyond

  • a love of learning and rich knowledge-base across a broad range of subjects

  • the knowledge and skills to view themselves as scientists, historians, mathematicians, artists...

We use an integrated approach to teaching the National Curriculum, drawing explicit links where appropriate to enrich children's experiences as well as teaching subjects discretely, where needed. The integrated approach is centred around a topic with key driver subjects, mapped out to ensure progression of knowledge and skills in these subjects as our pupils move up through the school. This approach ensures we are able to maximise opportunities for rich learning experiences, support our pupils to develop and activate a wide vocabulary across a range of subjects whilst also ensuring our pupils' access to a broad and balanced curriculum, progressing in each subject area from Early Years to Year 6 and beyond. Where links to the topic are not appropriate and do not provide opportunities to enhance pupils' learning experiences, the subject will be taught discretely.

The curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 includes the following National Curriculum subjects as specific in their Programmes of Study - English, Maths and Science are known as the core subjects, whilst Art and Design, Design and Technology, Computing, Geography, History, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education are known as the foundation subjects.

The contexts for teaching the National Curriculum Programmes of Study are chosen and adapted to reflect the rich, diverse communities that our schools serve, broaden experiences and embed enrichment opportunities throughout.

In addition to this, we teach Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education, including an age-appropriate Relationship and Sex Education curriculum (RSE). A core focus on pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) is embedded across all aspects of the curriculum and school life. We have high expectations of all our pupils and support them to be aspirational for themselves, develop a strong sense of self-esteem and the confidence to thrive.
